Asbestos cement sheeting was a popular roofing material until the mid-1980s. Asbestos fibres are embedded into cement sheets to add extra durability and insulation properties. As a roof begins to wear due to the weather, loose fibres are released into the air. At high enough concentrations these fibres are released and can be extremely hazardous to health.

To prevent further deterioration, existing asbestos cement sheeting can be encapsulated with specialised membrane and paint to prevent the release of loose fibres. Encapsulating the asbestos ensures the roof is non-hazardous for at least 10 years after treatment.
